Drilling of Holes on Flyover Ramp Scientific: Experts
Traffic police drills holes in Madhapur ROB flyover to drain rainwater

Hyderabad: In a bid to prevent waterlogging during rain, the Madhapur traffic police and civic authorities drilled holes in the ramp of the Madhapur flyover to allow rainwater to drain away. Engineers said this was a scientific measure taken after the existing scupper drain was found to be clogged with debris and trash.
Madhapur traffic inspector B. Satyanarayana said that the clogged drainage had led to water accumulating on the ramp, affecting traffic movement and posing a risk to commuters.
Madhapur traffic DCP T. Manohar Sai said, "Cleaning the scupper drain would take 9-10 days. HYDRAA flagged the issue, and it had to be treated with urgency. We had not received any complaints of waterlogging on the flyover during the previous monsoon season."
Both the GHMC engineering wing and the Madhapur traffic police inspected the spot before carrying out the drilling. “These are old flyovers and did not have the right mechanism to allow water to flow,” the Inspector said.
A security guard, A. Motilal, at a hospital told Deccan Chronicle, “A lot of water collects here. It's intolerable. It's good they drilled, but I still suspect heavier water flow will lead to splashing on pedestrians and riders under the flyover.”
The 25-year-old Masab Tank flyover has been shut every night for the past three weeks to traffic towards Mehdipatnam, as the GHMC replaces worn strip seal joints to prevent rainwater from seeping into the concrete pillars. GHMC workers are placing heavy metal sheets over the joints to allow daytime traffic to pass. However, traffic movement remains slow, as vehicles have to reduce speed and proceed cautiously.
