Domestic Violence Is a Crime, Not a Private Matter: Malkajgiri DCP

Padmaja stated women and men facing abuse within their relationships should either resolve the issues peacefully or walk out instead of tolerating violence.

Hyderabad: Malkajgiri DCP P.V. Padmaja stressed that domestic violence should never be treated as a private family issue but as a serious crime and suitable action should be taken.

“Most of the previously unheard-of crimes are now taking place within families. Domestic violence was seen as a private matter where families or police would not intervene. But no, it is absolutely a crime,” she said while briefing the media on the Boduppal murder case.

Padmaja stated women and men facing abuse within their relationships should either resolve the issues peacefully or walk out instead of tolerating violence. “Such of activities fall under the crime radar and attract punishment. People must have self-control and not act in the spur of the moment. Killing someone will only land them in jail,” the DCP said.

She explained that under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), punishment for such crimes were stricter and wider in scope. “Domestic violence is not private, it is a crime,” she added.

If there is any such incident, the victim must stand for herself, go to the police and file a complaint.
