Doctors Stage Protest Against TGMC GO

Doctors stood with placards in front of their respective colleges, demanding that the health department immediately withdraw the government order.

Hyderabad: Junior and senior doctors on Thursday staged black badge protests across government medical colleges in the state in protest against GO 229, which sought to increase government nominees in the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC).

Doctors stood with placards in front of their respective colleges, demanding that the health department immediately withdraw the government order.

Junior doctors in the teaching government hospitals at Sangareddy, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and other districts continued to discharge their clinical duties.

Adding weight to the protests, major professional bodies issued strong statements against the order. The Pediatric Academy of Telangana State (PATS), in a letter to the principal secretary, health, medical and family welfare department, expressed serious concern that GO No 229 could adversely affect the independent and statutory functioning of the Telangana Medical Council.

Similarly, the Association of Physicians of India (API), Warangal Chapter, strongly condemned the issuance of GO 229, stating that it undermines the autonomy and independence of the State Medical Council.
