Doctor Held in Midnight Raid for Illegal Abortion in Bhongir
Rachakonda SOT arrests repeat offender Dr Kumar; probe into sex test angle underway.
Nalgonda: The Special Operations Team (SOT) of Rachakonda Police raided Gayathri Hospital in Bhongir around midnight on Sunday and caught Dr Shiva Kumar red-handed while he was performing an abortion on a pregnant woman.
Acting on credible information, SOT officers took Dr Kumar into custody at the scene and later handed him over to Bhongir Town Police for further questioning.
Police said Dr Kumar previously ran Swathi Hospital in Alair, where he was arrested in 2022 for performing an illegal abortion. The health department subsequently sealed that facility.
Just a few months after the closure, Dr Kumar opened Gayathri Hospital and allegedly resumed unlawful procedures, reportedly charging about Rs 50,000 per abortion. Investigators are also probing whether the latest abortion followed an illegal sex-determination test, which would attract additional charges under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
The Bhongir Town Police have begun a detailed inquiry and are expected to file appropriate charges under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act and related laws.
