Denied exam, BTech students ends life
HYDERABAD: A 19-year-old BTech first-year student, Ronak Raj, died by suicide after allegedly being accused of malpractice and stopped from writing a supplementary exam, police said on Sunday. His repeated requests to continue the exam were denied, according to a complaint lodged by his brother, Abhishek.
Raj died in his hostel room at the Jadcherla campus of a deemed-to-be university in Mahbubnagar at around 4 pm on Saturday. His family has alleged harassment by faculty members.
Based on Abhishek’s complaint, police registered a case and began investigations, Jadcherla inspector B. Kamalakar said.
Police said that on January 31, while Ronak was writing his supplementary mathematics exam, invigilators and faculty members reportedly accused him of malpractice and prohibited him from continuing.
Abhishek alleged that his brother was subjected to severe mental harassment. Hurt by this, Ronak went into his room, asked his roommate to step out saying he wanted to make a call, and took the extreme step.
When the roommate tried to re-enter, he found the door locked. With no response from inside, he alerted the warden, who broke open the door and found Ronak dead. Police were informed and shifted the body to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Abhishek has named a professor and “other faculty members” in his complaint. Police have registered a case of death under suspicious circumstances and said it would be altered to abetment to suicide after investigation.
