Rajanna Sircilla: Through the streets of Chinna Bonala village in Telangana's Rajanna-Sircilla district, residents came together to perform Kappa Talli Ata, a centuries-old frog ritual believed to invoke rain during periods of delayed monsoon.
As part of the traditional ceremony, two men shoulder a pole horizontally with two frogs tied in a white cloth in the middle. They first carry out a jalabhishekam ( water cleansing ritual) on the frogs, and the persons carrying the pole by the locals before taking them out in a procession through the village with drums and fanfare. The unique ritual, rooted in local folklore, is believed to please the rain gods and bring much-needed showers during dry spells.
Bolagam Nagaraju, a local stated that, “At times when farmers are suffering due to scanty rainfall, all of us villagers from all age groups beyond caste and religion, perform this Kappa Thalli Ata, by praying to all our village deities. We are performing it and praying for sufficient rainfall, good availability of resources, health and prosperity of all cattle and our villagers," he said.
In some places in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, they perform a symbolic marriage between frogs to appease the rain gods.
The event comes at a time when rainfall has remained below expectations despite forecasts of improved monsoon activity, affecting agricultural operations and reducing the availability of drinking water in several areas.
With farmers, elders, women and children taking part, the community united in prayer amid growing concerns over the prolonged dry spell.
