Deccan Chronicle photojournalist K. Durga Rao won first prize in the Telangana State Photo Journalists Association’s Best News Photo Competition for his photograph ‘Snake Lift’.

Deccan Chronicle photojournalist K. Durga Rao won first prize in the Best News Photo Competition organised by the Telangana State Photo Journalists Association (TSPJA) for his image of residents and a Friends of Snakes Society rescuer trying to catch an eight-foot snake that had taken refuge beneath a car at an apartment complex in Nizampet. The photograph, titled “Snake lift,” was published in Deccan Chronicle on June 30. The competition received 306 photographs from 102 photojournalists across all 33 districts of Telangana. Rao received a cash prize of ₹10,000 along with the first prize.
Kiran Varanasi, a resident of Akruthi Venkatadri Towers and a software employee, the rescuer was initially cautious because of the snake's size but eventually managed to capture it safely. The snake was later taken away to be released into the wild. Interestingly, the rescuer was already carrying two or three snakes that he had caught at other locations earlier that day, Varanasi said.
