Cyclone Shakti Brings Heavy Rains, Relief to Telangana

The system is expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts of both Telugu states over the coming week

WARANGAL: A deep depression, which will be named Shakti if it intensifies into a cyclone, has developed over the South-Central Bay of Bengal and is moving northwest from the Tamil Nadu coast towards Andhra Pradesh. This system is expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts of both Telugu speaking states over the coming week.

On Sunday, the southern parts of Telangana witnessed relentless thunderstorms followed by heavy rainfall since Sunday afternoon especially in Medak, Siddipet, Kamareddy, Wanaparthy, Gadwal, Narayanpet, Sangareddy Mahbubnagar, Rangareddy and Nagarkurnool providing temporary relief from prolonged dry conditions.

Narayanpet recorded up to 60 mm rainfall at various locations, equal to the average rain for the entire month.

The IMD warned that winds could reach speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour accompanied by lightning and isolated thunderstorm and hails in regions which include Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Nizamabad, Medchal, Vikarabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Adilabad, Nirmal, Asifabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jagtial, Khammam, Mahabubabad.

The Hyderabad Weather Centre has specifically warned of intense rainfall over the next three days along with a drop in maximum temperatures by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius below normal. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rains are expected in Uppal, Medipally, Cherlapally, Rampally, Tarnaka, Mallapur, OU campus, LB Nagar, Vanasthali puram, Nagole and Ramanthapur.

The IMD also announced that the Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive early this year and may receive first showers by May 27 in Kerala ahead of the usual onset date of June 1. It also predicted that the 2025 monsoon season could bring above-average rainfall.
