CWC Hints At Shortages, Warns State To Use Water Wisely

HYDERABAD: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has hinted at coming water shortages, and cautioned Telangana to prioritise water use in its reservoirs to meet drinking water needs “to tide over any possible water shortage in the coming days.”

The CWC made a specific reference to the Singur reservoir on Manjira river — which is undergoing repairs — advising the project authorities to use the available water “prudently, and efficiently.” In a letter dated June 25, CWC chairman Anupam Prasad said as part of CWC’s weekly monitoring of storage in eight reservoirs in Telangana, it found that Singur had a “significantly low storage” of 4.52 tmc ft as on June 25, compared to the normal storage at the reservoir which should be around 11 tmc ft around the same time.

The Singur reservoir supplies 75 million gallons of water a day. A majority of west Hyderabad that includes Cyberabad region and the Financial District, in addition to several other parts of the city, depend on Singur for drinking water supplies.

The CWC chairman, while calling for careful marshalling of Singur waters, also advised the Telangana government to closely monitor all reservoirs for “taking appropriate action to avoid any water distress.” The letter also said that in the event of any existing Tribunal awards, or court issued orders on use of water from any reservoir, then such directions and advice must be followed.
