CURE Area To Get 7.5 Lakh New Street Lights

“We are yet to invite tenders, but the project will be taken up soon and the old lights will be replaced with new ones in a phased manner in the three corporations”: GHMC Official

HYDERABAD: The Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) department will implement a street lighting project under which 7.5 lakh street lights will be installed across the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) area. Of these, 5.5 lakh existing street lights will be replaced, while an additional 2 lakh lights will be installed in different parts of the city within the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

The existing 5.5 lakh street lights are being replaced as they have completed their lifespan of 50,000 hours, or around six years.

The project will be implemented in phases across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC). The estimated cost is around Rs 1,341 crore and includes a maintenance period of 10 years.

“We are yet to invite tenders, but the project will be taken up soon and the old lights will be replaced with new ones in a phased manner in the three corporations,” a GHMC official said.

Under the project, all existing street lights and Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) boxes will be replaced with LED lights.

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation has also proposed an Integrated Smart Solar LED Street Lighting System as a pilot project. Estimated to cost around Rs 1.43 crore, the project will involve the installation of 200 solar-powered street lights with poles.

“The lights are designed in such a way that even if there is no sunlight for three days, they will continue to glow,” a CMC official said.

The pilot project includes features such as monitoring the functioning of the lights through mobile phones, while the solar panels are built into the system.

“Based on its success, it will be extended to other parts of the city,” the official said.
Each unit will have a 70W LED luminaire with an output of more than 9,800 lumens, while the solar module will carry a warranty of 25 years.

At present, street lights are being maintained by vendors after the contract of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) ended. Following this, the MA&UD has proposed equipping the entire CURE area with new street lights.
