Couple Honoured for Saving Girl from Sexual Assault Bid

According to police, the accused lured the child with Rs 20 while she was playing near her house and took her in his rickshaw to a secluded location with the intention of sexually assaulting her.

Hyderabad:A quick intervention by a couple in Borabanda prevented an alleged sexual assault on a seven-year-old girl.

The couple, Kollati Ramesh and Mavulamma, noticed suspicious movements of a 60-year-old rickshaw puller Mohammed Shamsuddin, on Friday afternoon. According to police, the accused lured the child with Rs 20 while she was playing near her house and took her in his rickshaw to a secluded location with the intention of sexually assaulting her.

Sensing that something was amiss, the couple intervened immediately, rescued the child from the accused and alerted the police by dialling 100. Police personnel rushed to the spot, detained Shamsuddin and later arrested him under the Pocso Act and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act.

Hyderabad police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar felicitated the couple on Saturday for their exemplary courage and presence of mind. Sajjanar presented them with shawls and cash rewards. He said crimes against women and children could be prevented when alert citizens worked alongside the police. He urged the public to immediately report suspicious persons or activities, stressing that community vigilance was as important as police vigilance in ensuring public safety. Jubilee Hills DCP Ramana Reddy, Borabanda SHO Surender and other officials attended the felicitation programme.
