HYDERABAD: With many residents expected to travel to their native places for Sankranti, police have issued advisories urging them to take preventive measures against thefts.
Meerpet and Balapur police advised residents not to leave cash, gold, silver, or other valuables at home while they travelled to their native places, suggesting they be stored in bank lockers or other secured locations. Those carrying valuables by bus or train were asked to remain alert, avoid contact with strangers, and keep belongings under constant watch.
Residents were urged to lock main doors from the inside and avoid placing locks on gates from the outside. {Police suggested leaving lights switched on in one room, keeping footwear outside the door, and drying clothes in the veranda to create the appearance of occupancy.
The advisory also recommended informing neighbours, relatives, and the local police station before leaving town, and requesting them to keep an occasional watch on the house. Citizens were advised to suspend milk and newspaper deliveries during their absence.
Police further advised residents not to post travel plans on social media platforms such as WhatsApp or Facebook, and encouraged the installation of CCTV cameras in houses and colonies. Two-wheelers should be parked indoors and secured with chain locks.
Officials stated that regular patrolling will be intensified during the festival and urged citizens to dial 100 immediately if any suspicious movement is noticed.
