Congress Urges Centre to Sanction 590 More Seats at IIT-Hyderabad

Congress urges Centre to expand IIT-Hyderabad, establish IIM in Telangana

Hyderabad: The Congress has appealed to the Centre to sanction an additional 590 seats at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Hyderabad and to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Telangana. TPCC official spokesperson Chanagani Dayakar met Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy here on Saturday and submitted a representation in this regard.

Dayakar pointed out that the Central government had recently initiated measures to increase seats and revamp IITs in Tirupati, Jammu and Kashmir, Palakkad, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, with an allocation of ₹11,828.79 crore and the creation of 130 new faculty positions. “We welcome this as a significant development,” he said.

Highlighting IIT-Hyderabad’s achievements since its establishment in 2008, Dayakar noted its consistent performance in national rankings. "To further enhance the reputation of IIT-Hyderabad and offer better opportunities for students, we request the Centre to consider increasing the number of seats by another 590 and to explore the possibility of establishing additional IITs across the country,” he said.

He said Telangana was making rapid progress in the fields of education and medicine highlighting the state's growing role as a hub of technical knowledge. “Every year, nearly 10 lakh students apply for engineering courses in India. Of these, about two lakh students from Telangana appear for JEE Mains. This not only reflects the interest of students and parents but also highlights Hyderabad’s conducive ecosystem for education, healthcare and industry,” Dayakar added.

Reiterating the demand for an IIM in Telangana, he pointed out that while IIMs have been established in 26 states, neighboring Andhra Pradesh secured its IIM as early as 2015. “Establishing an IIM in Telangana would greatly benefit students and bolster the state’s educational landscape. We urge the Union Minister to take special care and responsibility in this regard,” he said.
