Congress Slams Population-Based Delimitation Plan

He reiterated support for a hybrid model of delimitation that considers factors such as Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) alongside population

Hyderabad:The Congress voiced strong opposition to the Union government’s proposed population‑based delimitation, with PCC working president T. Jagga Reddy calling it a “conspiracy” to strip southern states of political relevance.

Speaking at Gandhi Bhavan on Tuesday, the former Sangareddy MLA warned that any readjustment based on the forthcoming census would penalise states that had successfully implemented family planning programmes, while rewarding regions with unchecked population growth. “Southern states have demonstrated exemplary governance in population management, education and economic development. To now use that very success as a pretext to reduce our representation in Parliament is nothing short of a calculated assault on federalism,” he said.

Jagga Reddy backed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s stance on the issue, describing his concerns as “valid and justified.” He condemned BJP leaders for targeting the CM, alleging they were attacking him personally because they could not digest his factual explanation of how delimitation would disadvantage the South.

He reiterated support for a hybrid model of delimitation that considers factors such as Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) alongside population. “States that have successfully implemented population control should not be penalised. Representation must reflect both demographic and developmental realities,” he argued.

Congress leaders said they would continue to oppose any move that undermines federal principles and reduces the political voice of southern states.
