Agitating workers burnt the effigies of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar: Reports
KARIMNAGAR: The district unit of the Congress party on Monday staged a demonstration demanding protection of democracy and prevention of vote theft.
Based on a call given by AICC and TPCC, Congress leaders and workers led by DCC president and Choppadandi MLA Medipally Satyam took out a rally from Indira Chowk to the collectorate and staged a protest.
Agitating workers burnt the effigies of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah and raised slogans against them. They demanded the dismissal of Gyanesh Kumar.
Satyam said that irrespective of the rich and poor, Babasaheb Ambedkar provided voting rights to all sections of the people. In 79 years of independence, EC had never hurt the sentiments of the people and it always upheld their sentiments in the past, but the scenario has reversed under the Modi-led BJP rule.
He said, “Like CBI, ED and IT, an independent constitutional authority like EC has also become an associate of the ruling party after the BJP came to power at the centre. With a conspiracy to defeat Mamatha Benarjee in West Bengal and INDIA alliance in Bihar, the Modi government, with help from EC removed lakhs of people from voter lists in those states before the assembly polls.”
“Former election commissioners TN Seshan and JM Lingdo had worked independently. However, the present CEC Gyanesh Kumar began taking orders from Modi and Amit Shah by flouting norms, he alleged.
There, he said, is no change in the attitude of the CEC though two commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi opposed former’s decisions as many as 14 times. He emphasized the need for every citizen across the country to agitate until Gyanesh Kumar is removed from the post on the lines the Gen-Z made the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign, he said.
He also said that besides dismissing the CEC, both the PM and home minister should also step down from their posts by taking moral responsibility for the sabotage of the normal election process.
Manakondur MLA Kavvampally Satyanarayana, Karimnagar parliament constituency in-charge Velchala Rajender Rao, Alphores educational institutions chairman V Narender Reddy, Komatireddy Narender Reddy, Purumalla Srinivas, Arepalli Mohan, V Anjan Kumar and others also spoke.
Later, they gave a representation to the collector.
