Congress Protests Near BJP Office in Nizamabad Over National Herald Row

Addressing party workers, Mr. Nagesh Reddy alleged that the BJP-led Central government was deliberately harassing Congress national leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi

NIZAMABAD: Tension prevailed in Nizamabad on Thursday after ruling Congress leaders attempted to stage a dharna in front of the BJP district office. District Congress Committee (DCC) president K. Nagesh Reddy, along with party leaders and activists, took out a rally and tried to hold a protest near the BJP office. Anticipating trouble, police deployed personnel in large numbers and took several Congress leaders into custody.

Addressing party workers, Mr. Nagesh Reddy alleged that the BJP-led Central government was deliberately harassing Congress national leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. He said the National Herald newspaper, started before Independence, was nurtured and protected by the Gandhi family. Despite a Delhi court dismissing the case related to the National Herald, the Centre was continuing to target members of the Gandhi family, he alleged.

The DCC president further claimed that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had safeguarded opposition parties for the country’s integrated development. In contrast, he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to suppress the Congress party. He said the Modi government had failed to fulfil its poll promises, including the assurance of providing two crore jobs annually and curbing black money, even after 11 years in power.

Meanwhile, police detained Congress leaders at Yellammagutta crossroads when some attempted to proceed towards the BJP office. BJP district president K. Dinesh Kumar and party activists also assembled near their office. Timely police intervention prevented clashes between Congress and BJP workers.

District Cooperative Central Bank chairman Ramesh Reddy, City Congress president Bobbili Ramakrishna, senior leader Bantu Balram and others were present.
