Congress Government Abandoned Farmers: BRS

The BRS leaders alleged that the Congress government was creating hurdles for their convention by removing party flexes and banners.

Warangal: Senior leaders of the BRS on Tuesday criticised the Congress government, alleging failure to fulfil electoral promises and neglect of the farming community.

Speaking to media persons at the venue of the ‘Rythu Sangrama Sadassu’ in Hanamkonda, Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Banda Prakash and other leaders said agriculture was treated as a festival during the previous BRS regime, but had become a burden under the present government.

The BRS leaders alleged that the Congress government was creating hurdles for their convention by removing party flexes and banners. They further claimed that the government’s ‘Rythu Mela’ was organised hurriedly to divert attention from the BRS programme.

Former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao said the state requires `36,000 crore for complete loan waiver, but only `18,000 crore had been allocated, leaving farmers in debt.

Former minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s approach towards farmers was “emotional and historic”, and credited schemes such as Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, Mission Kakatiya and irrigation projects for supporting agriculture.

Former MP B. Vinod Kumar and MLC Pochampalli Srinivas Reddy said schemes like Rythu Bandhu, which provided investment support before the sowing season, had been stalled. They said even the Centre had adopted a similar model through PM-Kisan, but the state had failed to implement its Rythu Bharosa promise.

The leaders also raised concerns over maize procurement, alleging that farmers were waiting at procurement centres for over a month without response from officials.

The BRS urged farmers to attend the ‘Rythu Sangrama Sadassu’ beginning Wednesday, where working president K.T. Rama Rao is scheduled to address the gathering.
