Congress did more for farmers in 2 years than BRS did in 10 years: Tummala

The event, held from May 5 to 7, featured stalls displaying seeds, fertilisers and farm machinery.

Warangal: Agriculture minister Tummala Nageshwara Rao on Thursday said the Congress government had delivered more for farmers in two years than the previous BRS regime did in a decade. He was addressing the valedictory session of a three-day state-level Mega Rythu Mela held at Hanamkonda. The event, held from May 5 to 7, featured stalls displaying seeds, fertilisers and farm machinery.

The minister said nearly ₹21,000 crore had been credited to 25 lakh farmers under the crop loan waiver scheme within the first year of the present government. He alleged that the previous BRS government failed to complete even a ₹1 lakh loan waiver over 10 years, and that delays forced farmers to spend benefits on interest.

Nageshwara Rao urged farmers to adopt mechanisation and reduce the use of chemical fertilisers, citing concerns over soil health and related health issues. He also advocated natural farming practices. He encouraged crop diversification, including oil palm cultivation, stating that it is less affected by weather variations and offers higher returns. He said an oil palm mill had been established in Siddipet to support farmers.

The minister said the state was procuring maize and added that procurement of paddy and maize was being expedited to support farmers. He said the government’s measures had helped reduce the debt burden on farmers, in line with its stated objectives.
