Commuters Use Incomplete RUB At Malakpet, Risking Lives

The project, which was taken up by the South Central Railways (SCR) and Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) in 2021, aimed to ease the traffic congestion.

Hyderabad: Commuters are using an incomplete road underbridge (RUB) at Malakpet to avoid traffic congestions during peak hours, travelling towards Nalgonda cross roads, Dilsukhnagar, Chanchalguda and surrounding areas.

The project, which was taken up by the South Central Railways (SCR) and Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) in 2021, aimed to ease the traffic congestion. However, work got delayed due to tendering processes adopted by the railway ministry.

HRDCL has completed the CC Road laying for approach road, and left with the minor works. Though barricades were placed to prevent people from using an incomplete road, some portions were removed due to work related vehicle movement. Taking advantage of this, two-wheeler commuters are using the incomplete road to avoid traffic congestion.

Currently, the work to install a height gauge is underway. An HRDCL official said, “Remaining works for building footpaths, painting, signages, lighting system are to be finished. To avoid the water logging due to the slope, sensor pumps will be installed. The works will be finished within a month and will be opened for the public,” the official added.

The officials have conducted a trial run twice, and it was also opened temporarily recently when the heavy rain caused traffic congestion at the existing RUB. Due to the presence of the drainage naala and limited space, engineers have designed the steep climb at the vent to match the naala slab.

The new approach road will be 240 metres long and 14 metres in width and will be open only for light vehicles such as bikes, cars and autorickshaws.

In the evenings, the area experiences heavy crowding due to the metro, railway stations and bus stop, and auto rickshaws on the main road, leading to severe traffic. “If the officials complete the works quickly, it will be a big relief for daily commuters,” said N. Sai Kumar, a regular commuter.

The incomplete road is mainly being used by the locals and two-wheelers. “Authorities started the work in December, but it stopped the work and barricaded the area. However, some commuters are using the small portion which is open, to avoid the congestion," said Mohammed Sarwar, a local resident.
