Cobra's Daily Temple Visit Draws Devotees' Attention

HANAMKONDA: The first sight that greets devotees and priests as the doors of the Sidheshwara Temple in Hanamkonda open is a cobra coiled around the Shiva lingam.
Priest Suresh said the unusual occurrence had been witnessed for the past 15 years during the Ganesha Navaratri celebrations.
He said the cobra arrives around the time the temple opens, quietly approaches the sanctum and coils itself around the Shiva lingam. It remains there for some time before leaving.
The unusual sight has become a distinctive experience for devotees visiting the temple from across the district, with some considering the appearance of the cobra a divine manifestation of Lord Shiva.
Suresh said the Sidheshwara Temple is believed to be protected by Nagabandham and Bhairavabandham. He said the cobra had never harmed anyone and devotees therefore maintained a safe distance while watching it.
