Coal Production Hit in SCCL Mines Due to Heavy Rains

To make up for the production loss, SCCL management is expected to take special measures in the coming days to boost output.

Adilabad: Coal production came to a halt in several opencast mines of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) due to incessant rainfall over the past five days. Rainwater entered the opencast mines at Srirampur, Mandamarri, and Khairiguda in Mancherial and Komaram Bheem districts, disrupting operations.

To make up for the production loss, SCCL management is expected to take special measures in the coming days to boost output.

It is estimated that daily production of nearly one lakh tonnes of coal across 22 opencast mines has been affected. SCCL typically produces 1.74 lakh tonnes of coal per day, of which 80 per cent comes from opencast mines and the remaining 20 per cent from underground operations.

Specifically, in the Srirampur, Mandamarri, and Bellampalli divisions alone, about 30,000 tonnes of daily coal production from five opencast mines have been hit during the past five days.

The continuous rains over the last three days have significantly impacted coal production in all opencast mines located in the coal belt areas of the erstwhile Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, and Khammam districts.

Coal extraction is primarily carried out in opencast mines in Srirampur, Bellampalli, and Mandamarri divisions. However, due to the slushy conditions caused by water-logging, the operation of heavy vehicles used for coal transportation has come to a standstill. Overburden (OB) removal works have also been suspended.

Despite the disruptions in opencast operations, underground mining activities have continued uninterrupted in North Telangana districts, even during the ongoing heavy rainfall.
