Heavy Rains Batter Hyderabad, Cause Traffic Chaos

The authorities has issued a high-intensity rain alert for Hyderabad, cautioning residents about possible cloudburst-like conditions in multiple localities

Amid warnings of a ‘cloudburst’ put out by the Cyberabad police at about 4 pm on Thursday, eight areas in the city received over 10 cm of rainfall. Between Khajaguda sports at Gachibowli recording 131.5 mm, and Maitrivanam in Ameerpet logging 101.5 mm, the rain scored a ‘ton’ and more at three places at Khairatabad, two at Saroornagar and one at Uppal.

Several other areas located in Uppal, Ameerpet, Saroornagar, Shaikpet and Golconda received up to 75 mm of rainfall, triggering a series of alert by the Cyberabad and Hyderabad police about waterlogged roads and stalled traffic. In all, over 30 areas in the city received over 75 mm rainfall.

Heavy rain battered Hyderabad again on Thursday and swamped large parts of the city, just three days after Monday's deluge left roads submerged and trees uprooted. The India Meteorological Department placed Hyderabad under orange alert, for moderate rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, along with a warning of another possible thunderstorm later in the night.

Between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm, rainfall ranged from 29 mm in Khairatabad to 40 mm in Malkajgiri and LB Nagar zones. The Cyberabad traffic police put out a ‘cloudburst’ alert. Hyderabad and Cyberabad police issued a series of alerts regarding warerlogging and slow traffic movement from the evening, with the warnings being put out even at 10 pm, an indicating of the size of the problem

Traffic choked across arterial routes by sundown. Vehicles crawled through flooded stretches in Madhapur, Malakpet, Uppal, Manikonda, Nizampet, Krishnanagar, and Banjara Hills. Shaikpet Bridge reported waterlogging, which forced intervention by Hyderabad traffic police and Disaster Response Force (DRF) personnel. DRF teams were also deployed in Manikonda after rainwater gushed into multiple cellars, and a compound wall collapsed onto a moving vehicle. The driver, according to eyewitness accounts, escaped through the trunk.

Citizens were advised to stay indoors as multiple zones in the city, including LB Nagar and Khairatabad, recorded surges in rainfall during peak commute hours. Waterlogging at

Chatrinaka Road prompted HYDRAA and the local traffic police to step in. Commuters were advised to avoid the route as footage shared from the scene showed knee-deep water as people waded through.

Outside the capital, intense storm bands surged across rural Telangana. Meteorologists tracking real-time radar images pointed to a dangerous convective system passing through Nalgonda and Yadadri-Bhongir districts by evening, expected to cover Siddipet, Medak, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Warangal, and Khammam through the night.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, currently in Delhi, spoke to senior officials including the Chief Secretary and DGP, instructing that all disaster response units remain active for the next three days. Leaves were cancelled for municipal and emergency staff across departments. Officials were told to inspect drinking water storage points early in the morning and respond immediately to any contamination complaints. AirTech machines and silt carts were ordered to be stationed at flood-prone localities by 6 am.
