Centre Push on Oilseeds, Palm Boosts Telangana

The Centre’s focus on oilseeds and edible oil palm is expected to strengthen Telangana’s farm economy and support crop diversification.

The Centre’s renewed focus on oilseeds and edible oils under the National Food Security Mission (Oilseeds) and the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oil Palm (NMEO‑OP) is expected to give fresh momentum to Telangana’s farm economy, particularly in districts where oil palm cultivation is expanding rapidly.

Recent government data showed Telangana has emerged as a front‑runner under the oil palm mission, with large‑scale area expansion and strong farmer participation. The National Food Security Mission, now restructured as the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission, aims to boost productivity in key crops, including oilseeds, through improved seeds, agronomic practices and farm support.

Under NMEO‑OP, oil palm is being promoted as a long‑term income option, backed by plantation support, seed gardens, processing infrastructure and private sector participation. Telangana has already crossed a significant portion of its target and continues to add acreage.

Officials said the mission aligns with the state’s crop diversification push, offering farmers assured irrigation, market access and processing support. Agriculture scientist Dr Raghava Rao said the twin schemes could reshape dryland and irrigated farming if implemented carefully. “Oilseeds need yield improvement, while oil palm needs patience and processing support. Telangana is well placed because farmers respond quickly when pricing, irrigation and buying systems are reliable,” he said.

He cautioned that balancing diversification with water use, input costs and market stability will be critical. “Telangana’s lead can become a model for other states if Centre and state coordinate on seedlings, extension services and assured offtake,” he added.
