CBI, ISB, Interpol Join Anti-Piracy Push

Digital piracy today organised crime: Experts

Hyderabad: “Digital piracy is no longer a standalone issue — it is deeply linked with organised cybercrime and demands a coordinated response,” said S. Veeresh Prabhu, joint director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was addressing the inaugural of a two-day conference on digital piracy at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad.

Titled Securing the Future of Creativity, the conference was jointly organised by the CBI, ISB, and Interpol. The event brought together senior law enforcement officials, cybercrime experts, legal professionals, academics and industry leaders for intensive discussions on strategies to combat digital piracy.

The conference was inaugurated by Veeresh Prabhu and Prof. Manish Gangwar, executive director of the ISB Institute of Data Science.

In his keynote address, Rajeev Sharma, Director General of Police, Rajasthan, underlined the growing complexity of digital threats. “Law enforcement agencies must not only upgrade their investigative capabilities but also build collaborative networks with industry and academia to stay ahead of digital offenders,” he said.

The sessions covered a wide range of topics, including the piracy-malware nexus, piracy’s effect on India’s online video sector, technical challenges in investigations, legal hurdles, music piracy, and Interpol’s international response to online piracy. Training sessions were also held on investigative and analytical techniques.

A recurring theme across the panels was the urgent need for awareness-building, public engagement and capacity development within law enforcement agencies to counter the evolving landscape of digital piracy.
