Cardinal Washes Feet of Devotees on Maundy Thursday

Hyderabad:Maundy Thursday, commemorating the institution of the Eucharist and priesthood, was observed across the city with special prayers and Eucharistic services, along with the foot-washing ritual symbolising humility and service.

At St Joseph’s Cathedral, Gunfoundry, Cardinal Poola Anthony washed the feet of elderly members, symbolising humility and service, in line with the Biblical account.

At the Centenary Methodist Church, Resident Bishop A. Simeon addressed the congregation and explained the significance of the ritual. “When Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, it symbolised humility. Today’s leaders lack that humility. If we humble ourselves and follow him, we will be in his kingdom.”

At St Patrick’s Garrison Church, Mornington Road, senior pastor Swarna Bernard said the observance reflects the calling of priesthood to serve humanity. He added, “Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am. If I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. May Jesus grant us the grace to serve those in need.”

Rev Dr D.H. Paul said the day marks the culmination of the Lenten season. “As the Lenten season draws to a close, the faithful, having observed fasting and prayer, turn their focus towards the cross. On Maundy Thursday, as they partake in Holy Communion, they reflect on their lives and seek transformation for a better life.”
