According to officials, 396 sarpanches and 9,633 ward members were elected unopposed.

Nizamabad: The election campaign for the phase-1 of gram panchayat polls came to an end on Tuesday.

A total of 56,19,430 voters will cast their votes in the first phase of Gram Panchayat elections on Thursday. Of this, 28.78 lakh are female voters, 27.41 lakh male voters and 201 other voters.

In the phase-1, people will cast their vote at 37,562 polling stations to elect their representatives in 4,235 Gram Panchayats. The police department has made tight security arrangements for the peaceful conduct of polls, while poll officials have set up web-casting in sensitive polling stations in all districts.

The phase-2 elections will be on December 14 and the phase-3 on December 17. Votes will be counted immediately after the polling ends.

According to officials, 396 sarpanches and 9,633 ward members were elected unopposed. There were no nominations in five Gram Panchayats and 169 ward member posts. A few voters raised objections to the setting up of polling stations up to 5 km away from their residential places.

Ruling Congress leaders are confident of winning a majority of Gram Panchayats across the state. MLAs and Assembly constituency in-charges are playing a key role in the victory of contesting candidates. Opposition BRS and BJP leaders restricted themselves to their strongholds.

State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini said that all arrangements for the first phase of the 2nd General Panchayat Elections-2025, scheduled to be held on December 11, have been completed.

She conducted a review meeting via video conference from Hyderabad along with the Commission members of the Election Commission, interacting with district collectors, senior police officials, general and expenditure observers, and district panchayat officials.
