Cab Drivers Oppose RGIA Ramp Charges

The union argued that the policy is anti‑driver, given the heavy traffic congestion on airport ramps, delays in luggage handling, elderly passengers requiring assistance, and frequent network or payment glitches.

HYDERABAD: Cab drivers ferrying passengers to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport have raised strong objections to the newly introduced overstay charges and the eight‑minute free drop‑off policy at the airport ramps. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union issued a statement condemning the move, calling it unfair and impractical.

The union argued that the policy is anti‑driver, given the heavy traffic congestion on airport ramps, delays in luggage handling, elderly passengers requiring assistance, and frequent network or payment glitches. Under the current system, vehicles exceeding eight minutes are charged between ₹250 and ₹500, adding severe financial strain on Ola, Uber and Rapido drivers already struggling with rising fuel costs, low earnings from airport trips, and long waiting hours.

“Drivers cannot be penalised for delays caused by poor traffic management and operational issues at the airport,” the union said. It demanded a minimum free drop‑off time of 10–15 minutes, immediate review and reduction of overstay penalties, improved traffic management at entry and exit ramps, and exemption from penalties during congestion or technical delays.

The union, which has submitted a representation to the authorities, warned that if the concerns are not addressed promptly, drivers may be forced to boycott airport trips in protest.
