Burj at Masab Tank Opens Today

This project is designed and built by Deccan Terrain Heritage for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Hyderabad: In admiration of Hyderabad’s rich heritage and legacy, a new Burj or bastion constructed at the Masab Tank is ready for inauguration.

The Burj project completed by Deccan Terrain Heritage showcases the heritage fabric and city’s legacy by integrating traditional art, craft, and ancient architecture of the Deccan Plateau into modern urban landscape, including crossroads, medians, and public areas.

The structure, which will be inaugurated on Wednesday, revives ancient construction techniques with a hexagonal design, featuring sides that are 10-feet wide at the base and taper as the tower reaches its 20-foot height.

The top parapet and crenelations follow a straight line, with offsets designed to house chiming tower clocks on three sides. The inclined parapet design is inspired by the Public Gardens entrance gate and Yousuf Tekri in Tolichowki, Hyderabad.

“The construction of new Burj in old style is part of urban planning by the GHMC where heritage of Telangana is depicted in form of ancient art, craft & architecture, at the junctions, crossroads, medians showcasing heritage fabric of Hyderabad, Telangana,” said founder of Deccan Heritage Terrain Mir Khan.

It is built in pure lime mortar and compressed stabilised earth blocks (CSEB). Roofing & structure features Madras Terrace Roof at a height of 14 feet, resting on double-packed inverted brick and lime load bearing masonry, arched doors and windows are strategically placed to utilise natural airflow while providing a scenic viewpoint.

“Rather than the odd sculptures placed in the city , this will showcase the heritage,” Mir Khan told Deccan Chronicle.

Historical examples of these prominent bastions include the 87 bastions of Golconda Fort in Hyderabad, the Musa Burj and Petla Burj which were built at strategic locations to provide vantage points for guards and stable platforms for mounting cannons during battle.
