Build Cofferdam To Divert Pranahita Water, Says Kavitha

Rakshana Sena chief urges government to begin work by November-end to protect farmers

Telangana Rakshana Sena chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha has urged the state government to construct a 93-metre-high cofferdam near the Kannepalli pump house to divert Pranahita river water and protect farmers’ crops amid drought conditions.

She said the structure could be completed within one and a half months at an estimated cost of `25 crore.

Kavitha inspected the water flow near the Kannepalli pumphouse along with party leaders on Monday and explained the cofferdam proposal through a PowerPoint presentation.

Pointing out that nearly 2 tmc-ft of water flows through the Pranahita every day, she said the government should take steps to utilise the available water effectively.

Kavitha warned that her party would stage a protest at the Kannepalli pump house if the work did not begin by November-end. The government should not use the Medigadda issue as an excuse to deny justice to farmers, she said.

She urged the government to ensure water supply and free electricity until November to protect crops cultivated across 1.1 crore acres in the state.

Kavitha said her party’s objective was not merely to question the government but also to suggest solutions to public problems. She also called for the early completion of the Chinna Kaleshwaram project and justice for people affected by submergence.

The government must consult experts on the proposed cofferdam and take an immediate decision in the interests of farmers, she said.
