Nalgonda: The BRS postponed its “Rythu Maha Dharna” at Clock Tower Centre in Nalgonda after police denied permission. The protest is to condemn the Telangana government’s alleged failure to honour promises made to farmers before the Assembly elections.
BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao was scheduled to participate. However, police officials cited concerns over potential traffic disruptions as the primary reason for denying permission. “We received clear indications that a large number of BRS cadres from the erstwhile district would attend, leading to the Clock Tower Center being blocked from all sides,” a police spokesperson explained. “This would cause big traffic chaos, adversely affecting the public.”
Compounding the issue, the Clock Tower Centre lacks adequate parking facilities. Currently, there is a heavy influx of vehicles on National Highway 65 (Hyderabad-Vijayawada) and the Narketpally-Adanki State Highway, as commuters return to their native areas after the Sankranti festival. This congestion is expected to persist for the next three days. Additionally, National Highway 565 from Nakrekal to Yerpedu in Andhra Pradesh traverses the Clock Tower Centre area, making any large gatherings likely to result in severe traffic gridlocks.
In response, the BRS filed a lunch motion petition in the High Court seeking approval for the “Rythu Maha Dharna.” Police counsel informed the High Court that providing adequate security for the protest would be challenging due to scheduled grama sabhas from January 21 to 23. Consequently, the High Court has rescheduled the hearing on the petition to January 27.
BRS Nalgonda town president Bhongir Devender, who had applied for police permission for the demonstration, stated, “We have decided to postpone the ‘Rythu Maha Dharna’ in light of the High Court’s decision. We will file a review petition and seek permission for the protest after January 27.”
Expressing his frustration over the denial, Suryapet MLA and BRS leader G. Jagadish Reddy remarked, “Previously, permission was granted for several protest demonstrations and meetings at Clock Tower Centre. The state government is now muzzling the voices of opposition parties by denying us the right to hold our gatherings.”
