Dr Dyavanapalli explained that these songs are not merely folk compositions sung during the festival: Reports

HYDERABAD: The book ‘Bathukamma: Traditional Songs and Culture’ authored by the historian Dr Satyanarayana Dyavanapalli was released on Friday. Writer Tirunagari Devaki Devi said that the traditional Bathukamma songs, sung by women across generations, reflected family relationships, social life and a deep bond with nature.
She expressed the view that Dr Dyavanapallis’ book would help girls and young women understand the historical and cultural significance of the festival.
Manikonda Vedakumar, chairman of the Deccan Heritage Academy Trust, noted that Bathukamma songs represented an invaluable cultural heritage passed down orally through generations of women, and stressed that documenting these songs in written form was essential for preserving this rich legacy for future generations.
Dr Dyavanapalli explained that these songs are not merely folk compositions sung during the festival, but also served as oral history and collective social memory of Telangana women. He noted that the book explored how women in earlier generations learned these songs and passed them down from one generation to the next.
