KARIMNAGAR: BJP activists staged a dharna at Chinthakunta canal on Monday, demanding that the state government release water into the canal from the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP).

As police tried to move the activists in a vehicle to the police station, one of them climbed onto the bonnet. A police officer allegedly attacked him with a lathi following the incident.
Earlier, BJP district president Saini Mallesham criticised the Congress government for allegedly neglecting Hindu festivals. He warned that the agitation would continue until water was released from the SRSP.
Mallesham, deputy mayor Y. Sunil Rao, Karimnagar Parliament convenor B. Praveen Rao and others were taken into custody and shifted to the police station. They were later released.
