BJP’s Ankam Mounika elected chairperson with BRS backing; BRS nominee Mohammad Shoaib becomes vice-chairman
Adilabad: The suspense over the election of the municipal chairperson in Khanapur of Nirmal district came to an end with the BJP securing the post with support from the BRS.
BJP candidate Ankham Mounika was elected as the chairperson after receiving the backing of both BJP and BRS councillors. In return, BRS candidate Mohammad Shoaib was elected as the vice-chairman.
The 12-member municipal council had a fractured mandate, with BRS and BJP winning four seats each, Congress securing three, and one seat going to an Independent. With the support of the Independent and an ex-officio vote, Congress’ strength rose to five.
However, BRS extended its support to the BJP, tipping the balance in its favour. As a result, seven councillors voted for the BJP candidate, ensuring her victory in the chairperson election.
