BJP Eyes GWMC Polls in Warangal

With municipal elections expected in Hyderabad, Warangal and Khammam, the party leadership is focusing on expanding its presence in urban centres across Telangana.

Hanamkonda: The BJP has stepped up efforts to strengthen its organisational base in Greater Warangal, targeting the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) in the upcoming civic polls.

With municipal elections expected in Hyderabad, Warangal and Khammam, the party leadership is focusing on expanding its presence in urban centres across Telangana.

As part of this exercise, BJP national president Nitin Nabin is scheduled to visit Warangal on June 29 during his three-day tour of the state. Party leaders said the visit is expected to energise cadre and boost organisational activity in the erstwhile Warangal district.

The BJP, which earlier had limited presence in the region, has expanded its support base over the past decade. Its performance in GWMC elections has shown an increase, from one corporator seat in 2016 to 10 in 2021.

The party’s vote share also improved in the 2023 Assembly elections in Warangal East and Warangal West constituencies. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured a lead in the Warangal East segment and finished second in Warangal West.

Party leaders are working on a strategy to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level ahead of the civic polls. This includes efforts to induct leaders from other parties and highlight development projects supported by the Centre.

Among the projects likely to be highlighted are the proposed Mamnoor Airport and the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit, which the party says will support economic growth and employment in the region.

Political observers said the BJP is seeking to build on its recent electoral gains and position itself as a contender for the mayor’s post in the upcoming GWMC elections.
