BJP, ABVP Question Nalsar Film Screening
BJP seeks inquiry into screening, while ABVP demands action if university rules were violated
Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP and the ABVP have questioned the Nalsar University of Law administration over the screening of a documentary on jailed activist Umar Khalid on the campus. The documentary, ‘Prisoner No. 626710 Is Present’, was screened on Wednesday. Reports said a group of students organised the programme independently as a private event.
BJP chief spokesperson and media in charge N.V. Subash asked whether the university authorities knew about the screening and whether the organisers had obtained permission and followed institutional and legal procedures. He said the documentary was based on a person facing serious charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, relating to the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
Subash said law universities had a special responsibility to ensure campus activities followed the law. “Nalsar is a premier law university funded substantially through public resources. It must uphold the Constitution, the rule of law and national interests,” he said. He demanded an inquiry into the screening and sought action if rules were violated, welcoming the ABVP’s efforts to bring the issue to public attention.
In a separate statement, ABVP Greater Hyderabad secretary Pruthvi Teja condemned what he described as an unauthorised screening. He demanded a strict and transparent inquiry and sought action against those responsible under university laws. He alleged the film focused on a person linked to anti national activities and the Delhi riots.
