Birdwatchers Scout For Endemic Birds On May 10

This day is dedicated to birds that are found only in India and do not migrate to other countries.

Hyderabad:While the world celebrates World Migratory Bird Day on May 10, India observes Endemic Bird Day on May 10, which is the second Saturday of May every year. This day is dedicated to birds that are found only in India and do not migrate to other countries.

During summer, many of these resident birds become more active as it is their breeding season. They start calling loudly and can be heard even in city areas. Birdwatchers say that summer is the best time to observe these birds as they become more visible and vocal.

Some of the birds commonly seen and heard during this time in Central India and across Telangana include the Asian Koel, Indian Pitta, Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Common-hawk Cuckoo, and Indian Cuckoo. These birds are known for their unique calls and behaviour during the summer season. The Indian Koel, for example, is famous for its "kuhu kuhu" call, and the Indian Pitta is known for its bright colours.

Endemic Bird Day is also a time when birdwatchers across India record the presence and activity of these birds. This helps in tracking their population and understanding their behaviour.

While World Migratory Bird Day focuses on birds that travel from one country to another, Endemic Bird Day highlights the importance of India’s native birds that live and breed here throughout the year.

In Hyderabad, birdwatchers from Hyderabad will search for endemic birds on that day. The latest data on endemic birds will be released after May 10.
