BHEL Seeks Academic Research Tie-Up with JNTUH and Medaram

Hyderabad:Public sector engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is exploring a structured research collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH), with a focus on involving postgraduate and doctoral students in industry linked project work.
The discussions centred on engaging Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students in research areas such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, and materials science. The aim was to examine whether student projects and faculty research could be aligned with industry problem statements.
A delegation led by V.V. Subramanyam, executive director of corporate research and development at BHEL, visited the JNTUH campus and interacted with faculty members, students, research scholars, and staff of the University College of Engineering Science and Technology (UCESTH).
University officials briefed the delegation on infrastructure, faculty specialisations, and enrolment in MTech and PhD programmes. The discussions also looked at how academic research timelines and outputs could fit industry requirements.
At the college level, heads of departments from electrical, electronics, mechanical, and metallurgical engineering listed departmental strengths, consultancy work, and ongoing research activities. Patent related work, innovation initiatives, and incubation efforts were also discussed during the interaction.
Subramanyam said the engagement was aimed at moving towards a sustained industry academia partnership focused on industry relevant research rather than short term academic projects. He invited faculty members, research scholars, and students to visit the BHEL corporate research campus to understand current problem statements. Both sides agreed to take the discussions forward through department wise meetings and brainstorming sessions to identify specific areas for collaboration.
