BC Commission Expedites Caste Census Process in Telangana

Evolve scientific approach, avoid pitfalls faced by AP during similar survey: Experts

Hyderabad: The Telangana Backward Classes Commission has stepped up the process to devise the methodology and modalities for conducting caste census in the state.

The commission held a meeting with experts to seek their suggestions and opinions on the caste survey here on Monday. It will submit an action plan to the state government after holding meetings with representatives of caste associations, community leaders, NGOs, social scientists, anthropologists and linguistic experts to elicit their opinions and suggestions.

Meanwhile, a delegation of the people's committee on caste census met the BC commission chairman Vakulabharanam Krishna Mohan Rao and its member-secretary B. Bala Maya Devi on Monday. They submitted their suggestions and research papers on the caste survey.

The delegation comprised retired justice B. Chandra Kumar, Prof. Murali Manohar, Prof. P.L. Vishweshwar Rao, Prof I. Thirumali, Prof. S. Simhadri and others. They submitted a detailed paper on evolving a methodology, modalities, questionnaire and other issues for going about the survey.

They shared their experiences in detail and suggested that the survey should cover socio-economic, educational, employability and political representation of BCs. They called for a scientific approach across verticals.

They also discussed the recent caste surveys conducted by the Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Karnataka governments and also took stock of the legal issues they encountered and the measures needed to be taken to overcome such hurdles in Telangana.

It may be noted that the commission has already held a few rounds of discussions with premier institutions like the Administrative Staff College of India, Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Centre for Good Governance, Council for Social Development, and the Bureau of Economics and Statistics and sought their suggestions on the caste survey.
