Hyderabad: Union minister of state for home affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar has strongly criticised the Telangana government for its failure to seriously address drug-related crimes. He alleged that the state administration's enforcement efforts are merely "seasonal," focused only around festivals and the New Year.
Sanjay pointed to a key inquiry from the KCR regime, a high-profile drug case investigated by former excise enforcement director Akun Sabharwal. He questioned why the current government has not acted on the detailed report from this investigation.
The minister claimed that influential figures and film celebrities were implicated in the original probe, but crucial evidence was allegedly suppressed. According to him, during the interrogation by Sabharwal’s team, audio and video recordings of the accused's statements were created but then blocked from release. He further alleged that the then Chief Secretary, Somesh Kumar, seized the entire report and all recorded evidence.
Sanjay stated that this evidence—including the report, audio, and video—was never transferred to subsequent investigation teams or submitted to the court, effectively crippling the case.
In a call for governmental transparency, the Union minister demanded that the current administration reopen the investigation and interrogate Somesh Kumar to recover the missing evidence. While acknowledging the capabilities of the Chief Minister's current "Eagle Team," Bandi Sanjay expressed concern, suggesting that "a few among them appear to be compromising with drug peddlers." To ensure an "uncompromising crackdown" on the state's expanding drug network, he urged that officers known for their integrity and experience, such as Akun Sabharwal, be reinstated to lead the renewed effort.
