HYDERABAD: Restoration of broken Dwarapalaka sculptures at the Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanamkonda is progressing at a brisk pace, with the Hyderabad circle of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) aiming to complete the mending work in three weeks at a cost of ₹14lakh.
The work which commenced two months ago is being carried out by skilled artisans and Sthapatis from Tamil Nadu. Officials said the available broken pieces of these Dwarapaalas kept inside the temple for more than 75 years were thoroughly studied, mapped and documented based on principles of Shipla-Shastra.
Temporary matching models made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) are prepared and fixed to determine the accurate ornamental shape and size of missing portions. Based on which permanent models are carved in matching granite stone. The original broken pieces and newly carved sections are joined together using SS 304 grade stainless steel bars as anchors and matching epoxy resin under the supervision of experts.
