Ammal Case: 5-judge SC Bench Is A ‘Must’
Ramchander urges Modi for strong counsel

Hyderabad:BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to ensure that a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court hears a case on strengthening of ‘substantial deity interest’ and ‘Doctrine of Dharma’ of the Tiruppan Alwar Ammal (SC/ST) communities.
He said the case involved substantial questions of law related to interpretation of the Constitution. The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on Tuesday
In his letter, Ramchander Rao referring to the Special Reference Case No. 1, coming up under Article 145 (3), said any case involving a substantial interpretation of law should be heard by a minimum number of five judges. He requested the Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues to take steps to “instruct the arguing counsel appropriately on behalf of Government of India” to handle the reference coming up for hearing “sensitively in order to ensure effective adjudication” on the matter, “keeping in view the larger national interest and the Doctrine of Dharma of Tiruppan Alwal Ammal (SC/ST) communities.”
This, Ramchandra Rao said, would ensure the “eternal opportunity” of preserving ‘substantial deity interest’ together with the ‘Doctrine of Dharma’ which affects a sizeable number of citizens.
Welcoming Ramchander Rao’s support on the issue, C. Ranjaragan, head priest of Chilkur Balaji temple, said the BJP leader’s letter laid emphasis the rights of the deity to be worshipped, and that this be given the consideration it deserved with respect to the inalienable rights of the communities involved and to protect their religious practices.
