The party leadership has also directed him to immediately step down from his legislative post
Hyderabad:The AIMIM in a post on social media just past midnight on Saturday expelled its MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig from the party “with immediate effect”. S.A. Hussain Anwar, AIMIM joint secretary, in a social media post that was “last edited” at 12.04 am, said Baig "must immediately submit his resignation to the Chairman of the Legislative Council."
Baig, who was on the Umrah pilgrimage, returned to Hyderabad later on Saturday and remained silent throughout the day. It could not be established if his return was linked to his ouster.
The MIM’s move followed alleged ‘sexual assault’ on a minor, though there was no police case on the matter so far. Baig on August 26, when he was still on Umrah, had lodged a complaint with the cybercrime police alleging extortion threats over alleging ‘deep fake’ videos made using AI. He also shared a video claiming his innocence. Baig was a former driver of then-MLA Ahmed Pasha Quadri and a loyal party worker.
Social media was abuzz with sweeping allegations that Baig was caught ‘red handed’. A YouTuber, Safder Moosvi, claimed that after he was caught in the act, the party leadership had sent Baig on Umrah. When the purported videos of the alleged incident viral, the party expelled him without stating reasons, he alleged.
Hyderabad Youth Congress founder Salman Khan demanded that AIMIM publicly disclose the reasons behind the sudden expulsion of Baig. Commending AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi for quick action, he insisted that the party leadership clear the air and tell the public the reasons for the expulsion instead of staying silent. Salman Khan claimed that the controversy was not limited to Baig alone, alleging that an AIMIM MLA and a local corporator were linked to similar misconduct. He claimed that he possessed evidence to back his charges and was prepared to bring the, forward.
Even as the party kept the reasons for expelling Baig under wraps, insiders told Deccan Chronicle that the MIM leadership had taken the decision after the alleged videos were taken to the notice of the party high command. The party would not shield Baig in case police initiated action, sources said.
“The decision was promptly taken and this should be a strong message to partymen indulging in indiscipline. This is the first such instance in the party. The oolice will definitely initiate action, if what is being claimed is true,” a senior party leader said. “Our party will initiate action, if someone else does a similar act. There won’t be any political pressure and law will take its course.”
In his video, Baig had said: “They are creating videos using AI and posting on social media. I filed a complaint with Cyber Crime on August 26, regarding the AI video. I have done nothing wrong. Some people are intentionally defaming our party and its high command. I have worked in the party for a long time, with integrity and honesty (sic).”
Goshamahal MLA T. Raja Singh questioned Owaisi regarding the sudden, late-night expulsion and demanded that the AIMIM leadership transparently disclose the reasons behind the sudden action. The decision had raised significant suspicion amongst the people, he said.
Raja Singh urged Owaisi to address the national media and clarify the specific allegations or circumstances that triggered the unannounced, immediate expulsion. He criticised the decision being made and announced late at night, questioning what forced the party to act so secretly and with such urgency.
The Congress also demanded clarity over the reason for Baig’s expulsion. “If the AIMIM fails to disclose the reasons behind the action, either the leadership is scared or it doesn’t care about the people who it represents,” said Hyderabad DCC president Syed Khalid Saifullah.
Baig won the Council elections from the local bodies constituency on May 9, 2023. A school dropout, Baig was the party candidate from Rajendranagar in the 2018 Assembly elections.
He served as driver to former MLA Ahmed Pasha Quadri. An active party worker in the Rajendranagar constituency, he has remained with the party since childhood.
In the election affidavit submitted in 2023, Baig mentioned his profession as ‘social worker’, with assets worth `12 lakh. He said he had no criminal cases in the affidavit. However, in 2025, the RGIA police registered a case against Baig, two corporators and several others for allegedly obstructing policemen on duty and trespassing into the police station following a case involving cow vigilantes.
