Hyderabad: A 45-year-old woman with chronic liver disease underwent a rare and complex kidney tumour removal using a minimally invasive robotic technique at AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad, marking the first such procedure in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The patient, who also had ascites and an enlarged liver, was diagnosed with a 4x4 cm cancerous tumour in her right kidney. Surgeons opted for a retroperitoneal route — accessing the kidney from the side of the body without entering the abdominal cavity—due to the high surgical risks posed by her liver condition.
The procedure was performed by a team led by Dr Bipin Chandra Pal. “We avoided the abdominal cavity entirely, which would have increased risk due to fluid buildup and fragile liver tissue,” he said, explaining that the retroperitoneal approach—though more complex—was safer in such cases.
Using robotic instruments in the narrow retroperitoneal space, the team successfully removed the tumour while sparing the rest of the kidney. Real-time imaging during the surgery helped avoid damage to healthy tissue.
The patient, who had liver cirrhosis, was at higher risk for complications like infections and internal bleeding. Dr Mithun Sharma, a hepatologist involved in the case, said the technique reduced the chances of worsening her liver condition.
The patient had no major complications after surgery and was discharged in 48 hours, with preserved kidney function and a confirmed complete tumour removal.
