AIG Doc Receives AAAS Fellowship for Her Work on Gastroenterology in Diabetes
Saying she was humbled and honoured by the recognition, Dr Sasikala said, “It reflects not only years of dedicated research but also the collaborative strength of Indian science.

Hyderabad: AIG Hospitals has achieved yet another feat, with Dr M. Sasikala, its director of research, Institute of Translational Science, being awarded an honorary fellowship by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for 2024. Dr Sasikala is the only Indian scientist to be featured in the list. The AAAS, founded in 1848, publishes the popular journal 'Science'. The honorary fellowship is a prestigious international recognition in science.
According to the AAAS, Dr Sasikala was awarded the fellowship for her extraordinary contributions to the field of translational gastroenterology, where she has made particular studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying endocrine pancreatic dysfunctions in diabetes. The fellowship was also awarded for leadership in establishing research and training centres in India.
Saying she was humbled and honoured by the recognition, Dr Sasikala said, “It reflects not only years of dedicated research but also the collaborative strength of Indian science. I hope this honour serves as encouragement for young scientists across India to pursue practical, translational research which eventually brings tangible impact on patient care."
Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman, AIG Hospitals, himself an AAAS Fellow (Class of 2021), congratulated Dr Sasikala. “This is a proud moment for all of us at AIG. Dr Sasikala’s groundbreaking work in understanding diabetes and pancreatic dysfunctions has set a benchmark in translational gastroenterology. Her recognition by AAAS reinforces the global relevance of the research ecosystem we are building in India," he said.
