AI Devices Detect Breast Cancer In ASHA Workers

Officials said shortages of cartridges and the need for further training were limiting reach.

Hyderabad:Artificial intelligence‑assisted screening devices installed at two primary health centres (PHCs) in Medchal–Malkajgiri district have helped identify breast cancer in three ASHA workers, underscoring the importance of early detection.

The devices, set up at Alwal and Kushaiguda PHCs under an initiative by Mahita Foundation with support from Indian Oil Corporation’s CSR programme, are being used to screen women for breast and cervical cancer. However, the centres face challenges in procuring consumables and ensuring adequate training for staff.

At Alwal, officials said the device requires an upgrade, which would cost thousands rather than lakhs. At Kushaiguda PHC, medical officer Dr D. Supriya said nearly 1,500 women, including ASHA workers, had been screened. One 45‑year‑old ASHA worker was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. “She had felt a lump and undergone tests earlier, but was told it was fibroid. She did not go for cancer screening. This device has proved very helpful, as women visiting outpatient wards are now being screened,” Dr Supriya said.

Suspected cases are referred to Malkajgiri area hospital or MNJ Institute of Oncology for further evaluation.

The breast screening device, iBreastExam, developed by UE LifeSciences, is a handheld scanner that connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth. A healthcare worker moves the device over the breast, and the application flags suspicious tissue changes. The device does not diagnose cancer; abnormal results are referred for mammography, biopsy or specialist consultation.

The initiative also includes cervAIcal, a smartphone‑based cervical screening system. Each device costs around ₹20 lakh and can screen about 5,000 women. Staff received three days of training on operating the equipment and following protocols.

Officials said shortages of cartridges and the need for further training were limiting reach. They stressed the importance of awareness, as many women delay screening due to stigma, cost or lack of access.

Breast cancer incidence in Telangana was estimated at 40.2 cases per lakh women in 2020, compared with the national average of 31.3. About 60 per cent of cases are detected at advanced stages, highlighting the need for accessible screening.

Health staff said continued support from the department, including supply of consumables and regular capacity‑building programmes, would help expand screening and ensure timely referrals.
