Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao inspects work on the ‘karakatta’ in Bhadrachalam on Friday
Tummala raps irrigation officials for slow-paced karakatta works

NALGONDA: Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao fumed at irrigation department officials for the inordinate delay in the karakatta works, which were taken up to protect low-lying areas of Bhadrachalam from Godavari river floods.
Accompanied by district collector Jitesh V. Patil and SP Rohit Raju, the minister inspected the progress of sluice works at Kunamneninagar in Bhadrachalam.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that construction of the new karakatta was taken up along with Godavari in Bhadrachalam to ensure that low-lying areas don’t get submerged during floods. He pulled up the superintendent engineer of the irrigation department for the slow progress although the works had commenced a year back.
He instructed the officials to complete all karakatta related works by May 31. He also advised the officials to increase the height of karakatta. Permanent motor pump sets should be set up for pumping flood water, he added.
