WARANGAL: Government schools often face negative perceptions, with many people looking down on them. Despite having qualified and experienced teachers, student enrolment tends to be low as parents generally prefer private schools for their children.
However, a government primary school in Kailashpur village, Raghunathpally mandal, Jangaon district, stands out. Parents now consider themselves fortunate if their child secures admission, given the high demand. The headmaster has even put up an “Admissions Closed” sign due to a significant increase in enrolment this academic year.
Just last year, the school was struggling, with total enrolment down to around 48 and facing the prospect of closure. The teachers and the headmaster then implemented a series of strategies to boost enrolment, which have paid off.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, headmaster A. Yadava Reddy said the school is operating at full capacity and cannot accept new admissions. He noted that the staff introduced new teaching methods, organised cultural programmes funded by community donations, and showcased student performances on social media, including a local YouTube channel.
Videos of student performances were shared across WhatsApp groups, each with about 500 members from neighbouring villages. Under the Badi-Bata programme, a door-to-door campaign was also conducted during the summer holidays to engage parents. The response was overwhelming, ultimately leading the school to close admissions.
Enrolment has now reached 174, prompting the administration to display an “Admissions Closed” notice on the premises.
