Adilabad’s Khanapur Tank To Get Facelift Under AMRUT-2 Scheme for Rs 3.14 Cr

The tank, located in the middle of Adilabad town, has deteriorated over time due to these encroachments, leading to stagnation and foul smell, officials said.

Adilabad: Efforts are underway to restore the Khanapur tank in Adilabad under the Centre’s AMRUT-2 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme at a cost of ₹3.14 crore.

Municipal officials have identified large-scale encroachments on the tank, which originally spread across 114 acres. About 14 acres have been encroached upon, with nearly 400 houses constructed in violation of the Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zone limits. The encroachments are located in Kolipura, Ambedkarnagar, Tirpelli, Brahmanwada, Khanapur and Bokkalaguda colonies.

The tank, located in the middle of Adilabad town, has deteriorated over time due to these encroachments, leading to stagnation and foul smell, officials said.

Earlier proposals to develop the tank as a mini tank bund with boating facilities and a park did not materialise. The municipality, along with irrigation and revenue departments, had submitted details of encroachments to the state government.

Officials conducted a fresh survey in September 2024 through four teams to identify structures within the FTL and buffer zones. The survey recorded a higher number of illegal constructions compared to markings made in 2017. The exercise included collection of details on families, household members and the type of structures, including RCC buildings, sheds and huts, for submission to the state government.

The state government had earlier indicated that families affected by eviction would be provided two-bedroom houses.

Residents of Bokkalaguda said they had been living in the area for over 30 years and had been paying municipal, water and electricity charges. They questioned how demolition could be carried out now after permissions were granted earlier.

Adilabad MLA Payal Shankar, MP Godam Nagesh and municipal chairman Bandari Anusha recently laid the foundation stone for the restoration works.

Payal Shankar said the removal of encroachments and beautification of the tank was necessary for its restoration and would create additional recreational space for residents of Adilabad.
