Adilabad Municipality Plans Borewells at Tank Sites Amid Drinking Water Shortage

Officials said irregular water distribution has been reported in the municipality due to depletion of water sources amid rising temperatures.

Adilabad:With drinking water sources drying up, Adilabad municipality is set to dig borewells at existing water tank locations in colonies to improve supply to households.

Officials said irregular water distribution has been reported in the municipality due to depletion of water sources amid rising temperatures.

The state government has sanctioned Rs 6 crore for the construction of a check dam on the Landasangi rivulet near the pump house to store water for drinking water supply to the municipality. Officials said the pumping capacity at the existing pump house remains low and needs augmentation to meet demand.

Residents in interior villages have also been facing shortages due to the prevailing heatwave conditions.

Meanwhile, the municipality has submitted a proposal seeking `54 crore for an alternative drinking water supply scheme from the Korata–Chanaka barrage. Adilabad Collector Rajarshi Shah is expected to forward the DPR of the proposed project to the State Government. Officials indicated that the project is likely to be completed and become operational next year.

As part of the proposed plan, a 17-km pipeline will be laid from the Korata–Chanaka barrage to the municipality.

Water supply under Mission Bhagiratha from the SRSP has also been affected due to falling water levels, further impacting distribution.

Adilabad municipal chairperson Bandari Anusha said the municipality plans to dig around 30 borewells, one each near identified water tanks in colonies, to draw and supply water to households across 49 colonies.

She said borewell works would begin within two days to address the immediate shortage.
