Adilabad Keep Tab On Social Media As Youth Pose With Swords

DSP L. Jeevan Reddy said officers are closely monitoring Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and X, and will take stern action against anyone spreading communal hatred or panic online.

Adilabad: Adilabad police have stepped up surveillance of social media platforms after a series of incidents in which local youths posted images of themselves carrying knives and people engaged in extortion under the guise of “social service.”

In Adilabad town, Sheik Saleem — known locally as “Kanchi Saleem” — was booked after posting a photograph on Instagram brandishing a knife.

In Ichoda, police charged Munde Venkat and Naresh for uploading WhatsApp status images of themselves wielding swords while celebrating a friend’s birthday at a temple in Gudihathnoor.

DSP L. Jeevan Reddy said officers are closely monitoring Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and X, and will take stern action against anyone spreading communal hatred or panic online. In a recent “Rowdy Mela,” SP Akhil Mahajan convened dozens of individuals listed in rowdy sheets, warning them that extortion, gambling (matka), drug sales and other anti-social activities will lead to prosecution. Those who reform may have pending minor cases dropped, he added.

Police also cracked down on so-called “social service” extortion rackets, arresting Jadhav Gopal — self-styled president of the “Tiger Group” — and registering a case at Neredigonda police station.

SP Mahajan urged residents not to believe unverified rumours on social media and to report threats or suspicious activity by dialing 100 or contacting their local police station.
